Java beans laced with arsenic?
Can anyone name an exotic plant with poisonous berries found in Java?
Coffee?
The seeds of the berries of the coffee tree are quite toxic until removed from the fruit and then roasted. Many tropical trees have fruit which is toxic to one species but not another. Strychnine is very toxic to mammals but birds can tolerate it. This prevents mammals from chewing up the seeds. Birds eat the fruit whole and deposit the seeds whole in their waste. Cherry trees are very poisonous because of cyanide. The only part of the plant which does not contain cyanide is the flesh of the fruit. The seed is toxic, but so hard it can survive being chewed and swallowed. The flavor of chocolate comes from the seeds of the coco tree. Its seeds contain theobromine, which is very poisonous to most animals. Only super omnivores such as pigs, rats and humans can eat chocolate without any ill effects.
