Reply:Do you want the exotic name for you, or for him? The reason I ask is that I myself want to name my children something out of the norm, but not for the sake of being different. I believe in naming a child in the way the ancients did: to show meaning.





How about taking common names, and using the modern English translations:





Instead of Peter, how about Rock?


Jonathan = God's Gift


Anthony = Priceless


Rex = King





You could use foreign words meaning essentially the same things=





Sinepretio (see-nay-PREH-tzyo)


Aureus (AWR-ee-uss)





Whatever it is, make sure you have a very good reason to name your child. If it is unusual, he will have to explain it many times over the course of his life. People who have unusual names in the States (like "Jens", "Lars", "Miro", "River", "Sky", etc) are always asked about the origin of their name. If your son was named for a good reason, he will not resent the "exotic" sound of his name. However, if it was only because his mother wanted to be different, he will resent you for making him bear a burden.





Remember that he will have to go through grade school and fill out job applications 鈥?you don't want to have him feel any shame in being different.
